Hiện nay, phần lớn các thiết bị đã được đầu tư cho ngành cơ khí ở Việt Nam thường không đồng
bộ, có rất nhiều máy gia công NC và các máy CNC có hệ điều khiển cũ nên không có chức năng
kết nối máy tính và tích hợp CAD/CAM. Do đó, không thể ứng dụng được công nghệ
CAD/CAM/CNC trên các máy gia công này. Bài báo này trình bày mô hình và kết quả nghiên cứu
tích hợp phòng thiết kế với các trung tâm gia công CNC hệ điều khiển Fanuc và triển khai ứng
dụng công nghệ CAD/CAM/CNC trong đào tạo và chuyển giao công nghệ tại trường Đại học Kỹ
thuật công nghiệp.

INTEGRATED MACHINE CENTER VMC-85S WITH THE CAD/CAM SYSTEM - APPLICATION
OF CAD/CAM/CNC IN TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AT THAI NGUYEN
UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT
Currently, most of the equipments that have been invested in mechanical engineering in
Viet Nam are not synchronized. There are many NC machines and CNC machines that
have old controllers which can not link computers with integrated CAD/CAM system.
Therefore, it may not able to apply CAD/CAM/CNC technology in such systems. This
article presents a model and research results for integrating CAD/CAM system with CNC
machines using a Fanuc controller and for deploying CAD/CAM/CNC technology
applications in training and technology transfer at Thai Nguyen University of Technology.

* 1. INTRODUCTION
Currently, CAD/CAM technology applications
are becoming common in manufacturing and
process engineering in Vietnam. For training
and transfering this technology, Thai Nguyen
University of Technology has invested in
equipments such as: CAD/CAM design
laboratory, machine center VMC-85S,
Coordinates Measure Machines (CMM) -
C544, Rapid prototyping machine - 3DP,
Computer Integrated Manufacturing -
OpenCIM... However, the machine center
VMC-85S is not able to be connected with the
CAD/CAM system, because the machine
does not have a DNC function and signal
transmission cable. As well, no transmission
software is installed in the parameter
functions of the machine.
To widen the ability of the VMC-85S in
machining 3D surface, to improve the training
process and the transfer of technology at Thai
Nguyen University of Technology, the VMC-
85S machine should be connected with the
CAD/CAM system.
2. MODELING THE RESEARCH PROCESS

2.1. Methods to connect CNC machine
In order to connect the CNC machine, the NC
code can be delivered from one or more
computers. The process will then compile the
content of the files into the NC code; this code
provides commands for the operation of the
convention in order to determine the orbital.
Popular controllers are Fanuc, Heidenhain,
Siemens, Fagor, Anilam and Hass. Each
controller is the format of parameters and
method of connecting individual through the
software connection. [1, 2, 6]

2.2. Model of integrated CAD/CAM/CNC
Based on some investigated [2, 6, 7], a model
LAN-DNC network to integrating CAD/CAM
system with the CNC machines was
constructed by the authors, and is shown in
Figure 1. This was done in order to connect
the CNC machine with the computer or to

operation from the CAD/CAM system.

This model was designed and implemented
with DNC softwares and databases used to
manage drawings and files in the G-code and
DNC server to connect and receive data from
the computer server to the CNC machines.
The data is received from the CAD/CAM
room, or directly on the server PC, through
LAN or Internet connection.
3. DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTS
3.1. signal transmission cable RS-232
According to the standard RS232,
characteristic transfers of Fanuc controller [1]
and based on research [4, 5, 6, 7] a protocol
is shown in Figure 2. It the functions used for
each cable of the connection as described in
Table 1 was designed.

3.2. Install the parameter connection
Each Series of the Fanuc controller has
different parameters for connecting a
computer with CNC machines. In order to
install, the parameters must be edited to the
appropriate standard connection. Based on
Fanuc controller [1] we installed with the
connection parameters for each Series as
follows:
- Fanuc - 3 Series
- Fanuc 0M Series
- Fanuc 0i-M/0i-T Series
- Fanuc 6 and 9 Series

- Fanuc 16 / 18 / 21 (M, T, I Series)
3.3. Results integrated machin e VMC-85S
After designing and installating the LAN
network and integrated the CAD/CAM system
with the machine center VMC-85S; DNC
Server software was installed into the server
PC. This server is located in a seperate room
and is connected and integrated into the
network as shown in Figure 3, 6.

3.4. Examples of products
The results have been applied to
manufacture mold die castings, as shown in
Figure 4. The products made by the mold die
are shown in Figure 5.

4. DEPLOYING APPLICATION OF CAD/CAM/CNC IN
TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFERING
4.1. Application s in post graduate training
Results of this research project have been
used in some Master's thesis of students at
Thai Nguyen University of technology as
shown below. For example: 1. Thesis:
"Research assessing the accuracy Reverse
engineering using the machine center VMC-
85S"
In this study, the authors have used reverse
engineering technology for modeling products
such as the motorcycle part as shown in
Figure 7. Using Coordinates Measure
Machine (CMM) or Laser Scanners to scan
pictures, the data cloud points are obtained.
After that, CAD/CAM/CAE software may be
used to redesign the surface of the product.

Process design CAD/CAM and manufacturing of
products have been done by this study using
VMC-85S anh CAD/CAM system.
2.Thesis: "Research Advanced accuracy
when machining Geometries and shaped
complex on 3 axis CNC machines by
compensation method wrong number"
In this study, the authors have applied the
CAD/CAM/CNC technology on VMC-85S to
compensate for errors in the software as
shown in Figure 9.

This project has been completed and
presented in Master's thesis, and has
received high score at Thai Nguyen University
of Technology.
4.2. Applications in training and
technology transfering
Research results of this study are being
implemented in training at Thai Nguyen
University of Technology. Particularly in the
subjects of:
1. CNC and CAD/CAM system
2. Machines technology manufacturing
3. Machine tools
4. Manufacturing Automation
5. Advanced manufacturing...
The results of this study can play an important
role and are a basis to improve training and
technology transfer at Thai Nguyen University
of Technology. The program for technology
transfer using CAD/CAM/CNC is being
proposed as shown in Table 2

5. CONCLUSIONS
Results of the research integrated CAD/CAM
with the VMC-85S machines have widened
the ability of technology in machining the
surface of 3D objects, research applications
of Technology CAD/CAM in the VMC-85S
and deploying applications effectively in
training and technology transfer of
CAD/CAM/CNC at Thai Nguyen University of
Technology. This is scientific basis for
integrating other machines with the CAD/CAM
systems, Especially in the trend of integrating a
variety of CNC machines, as well as creating
industrial network DNC-LAN, use to manage
design (PDM) and business management
(ERP).
